Using a Marathon Mindset to Overcome Your Limitations

The marathoner’s mindset

We are only limited by our beliefs about ourselves. Yolanda Holder knows this better than anyone. At 62, Yolanda is breaking world records in unconventional ways. As a two-time Guinness World Record holder who began marathoning as a walker at age 50, Yolanda knows something about overcoming limitations. Yolanda has made it her mission to challenge the world’s ideas about age and illness. Inspired by losing both of her parents to type 2 diabetes, Yolanda is leading others into greater health every day by setting an example of someone who owns their health, and is constantly growing beyond their limits. She invites us to get past our own challenges, pain, and fears, so that we can remind ourselves how able and powerful we truly are. And Yolanda reminds us through the power of her example that no impact is too small – we can change the world simply be being ourselves.

What you can do today

  • Consider your current challenges, and the challenges we’re all facing together. How can you reexamine your relationship to those challenges in a way that makes them feel like an opportunity for you to grow, rather than something that may feel hopeless? How can you lift others up as they face their own challenges?

  • Spend some time considering the driving force in your life. Have you found your calling - that thing that lights a fire in you every day? How can you offer whatever gifts you have by accepting the purpose you feel driving your life forward to benefit those around you?

  • Accept Yolanda’s challenge to adopt a new habit that benefits you or someone else for a certain number of days that works for you. You can follow Yolanda on Instagram or Facebook to follow her current marathons, and join in from where you are.
